I work with Pacific Mist Music, providing lessons and coaching for 'beginner' and 'intermediate' violinists in Reno, Nevada. I can provide these lessons in local area schools, at nearby homes, and and also at a studio within my own home. I record all lessons, so that students may use the recordings during following weeks.
Emergency cancellation notices should be sent by text to my cell phone, 775-741-5330. Initial inquiries are also welcome, please send a text message to that same number.
I am familiar with the Suzuki method, but prefer to use more recent methods and books (with videos) which typically allow dedicated students to progress more rapidly. I do not require a parent to participate in voilin playing, and I encourage my students to concentrate while playing alone. (The traditional 'Suzkuki Method', in contrast, requires a parent to participate in playing, and also emphasizes frequent playing within a group.)
My recommended series of initial student books is "The ABC's of Violin", by Janice Tucker Rhoda (published by Carl Fischer). The first books of this series provide a good introduction to basic bowing techniques and fingering in positions 1-3.
Following the use of those intial books, I like to focus on Sonatas, Concertos, and advanced Etudes. I prefer the Carl Flesch 'Anaytical Edition' of the Kretuzer Etudes (plublished by Hug), even though it is more expensive than than the Galamian-edited Edition (published by International Editions). For most other sheet music, I prefer versions published by Internatation Editions.
Although I am retired, I am also available for playing on a limited basis.
